Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, trumpeter, composer and arranger Bill Mobley moved to New York City in 1987 and has since become a fixture in the city’s flourishing jazz scene.

His sideman credits include New York performances with James Williams, Geoff Keezer, Mingus Dynasty Band, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, and the Toshiko Akiyoshi Orchestra, the Pete McGuinness Jazz Orchestra, the NuYorkestra, and CTA to name a few, as well as smaller groups led by Marvin “Smitty” Smith, George Coleman, and T. S. Monk among others.

He has recorded 3 big band CDs as leader and arranger in New York for Spacetime Records as well as 4 other small group records for Spacetime as leader. For 3 and 1/2 years he was director of the Smoke Big Band on Monday nights at Smoke Jazz Club in Manhattan where his latest big band CD was recorded live by Spacetime.

Numerous other recordings as sideman are in Bill’s credits, which include CDs by Geoff Keezer (2), Alan Dawson, Bill Pierce, James Williams, Bill Easley, Jean Toussaint, Gary Morgan and Panamericana, Public Enemy, Little Maestros, Harold Mabern , Donald Brown (4), Pete McGuinness Jazz Orchestra(2), Mike Kaplan nonet, Chuck Braman Quintet, and B.D. Lenz.

Bill has taught in the Music Dept.of William Paterson U. in New Jersey for the last eight years where he has students in Ear Training, Ensembles, and Private lessons.
